"In keeping with the Shane Black's seemingly unattainable unicorns theme - I give you the original 2002 TV pilot of The Nice Guys. Joel Silver has gone on record multiple times stating that this version of Nice Guys would have been a total disaster. CBS loved the idea and really want it to go. Which can easily translate into CBS wanted to market the sh** out of Shane Black's first TV series. The main problem at the time was casting which just never came together. Then the stuffy suits got into it bitching about kids being put in the boot and what they described as "morally ambiguous" lead characters. In truth absolutely nothing about the project fit the CBS brand and it was likely doomed at concept. Absolutely nobody is upset about this on the creative end. As the story goes the project was quickly re-written as a feature within a year. It too went nowhere until 2009 when the 70s rewrite was suggested by Black and the success of Iron Man 3 then put the project back into play. 14 years later we got one of the most enjoyable films of last year that I personally think is already criminally underrated.
